According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake that occurred around 2 a.m. on the same day occurred off the coast 16 kilometers south of Malibu Beach and 14 kilometers west of Los Angeles.
After the earthquake, a magnitude 3.5 aftershock occurred at 2:03 am, and at 2:22 and 2:38 am the aftershocks gradually weakened.
According to the LAFD, the earthquake forced the Los Angeles Fire Department to switch to seismic mode, which includes strategic investigations of all major “trouble areas.”
“Your LAFD completed a strategic survey of 470 square miles of the City of Los Angeles following a magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Malibu. No damage or injuries were reported and normal operations have resumed,” the LAFD said at 2:45 a.m.
